Built Dffrnt: Week 2 – Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast

Culture Eats Strategy For Breakfast

Last week, I shared a few thoughts from Peter Drucker and the idea of Kaizen — continuous improvement, all the time.

Here is another Drucker idea:

“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

We can make great plans.  And, we should make great plans.

But how do we respond when the plan goes wrong?

That’s when culture takes over.

Former Navy SEAL Commander, Jocko Willink, has a video called

“Good”

that I like a lot.

The idea is simple. Something goes wrong?

Good.

Now we have something to solve.  Didn’t go our way?

Good.

Now we find out what we’re made of.

This mindset makes me think of the stoics; Marcus Aurelius said,

“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

That doesn’t mean problems are fun.  Some are expensive, annoying, and show up at the worst possible time. But they also give us a choice.

We can blame, complain, throw a tantrum, and point fingers.

OR we can use it to Build… Build ourselves, build each other, build better systems, better teams… it is all a choice in perspective.

So that’s the challenge for this week:

In good and especially tough times,

“What can we learn?  What can we make better?   How do I turn this into a long-term win?

That kind of mindset makes teams stronger. It builds trust. And over time, it’s what separates average companies from great ones.

Here’s the Jocko video if you want to watch it:

I appreciate you all… Let’s keep building… Let’s play to win!
