The Thief in My Pocket
Deep Work, and What Steals It.
There is a thief in my pocket. It does not take money. It takes the one thing I can never get back.
In a world built to distract you, the ability to focus has quietly become a superpower.
A computer scientist named Cal Newport noticed something the rest of us feel but cannot name. The world got very good at stealing our attention. Notifications, pings, the phone in your pocket buzzing every few minutes. And while everybody got more distracted, the people who could still sit down and focus hard on one hard thing started running away from the pack. He gave it a name: deep work.
“The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable.”
Cal Newport, Deep WorkRare and valuable in the same breath. That is the definition of an edge. The person who can focus is worth more every year, precisely because so few people still can.
Do not confuse this with being busy. Busy is easy. Busy is answering forty texts and finishing nothing that matters. Deep work is the opposite: one important thing, full attention, no phone, until it is done right. On a job site the difference is not abstract. Distracted work is missed dimensions, rework, and safety near-misses. Focused work is quality, speed, and craft you are proud to put your name on.
“What you focus on grows.”
Nate LowrieWhatever you give your focus to expands, and whatever you let the noise steal, shrinks. This is also how you actually get better. At Bjerk we call it Positive Mind: hungry and humble to learn, grow, and create value faster than the field. You cannot learn a hard skill in ten-second bursts between distractions. Mastery is built in the quiet blocks where you go deep, wrestle with the hard thing, and come out sharper.
Playing to lose vs. playing to win
Shallow & busy → playing to lose
- Reacts to every ping.
- Multitasks, finishes little.
- Confuses motion with progress.
- Learns slow.
- Ships average.
Deep & focused → playing to win
- Guards blocks of focus.
- One thing, all the way.
- Measures motion by output.
- Learns fast.
- Ships excellent.
You will never think your best thoughts or do your best work with one eye on a screen. Protect the block. Turn off the noise. Give the work everything.
Go deep.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” Colossians 3:23
Let’s Play to Win
Steal back one block.
Pick your single most important task. Put the phone in another room, not face-down on the desk, another room. Set 60 to 90 minutes and work on that one thing only. When your hand reaches for the phone, and it will, notice it and come back.
Do this a few times and you will feel a gear most people never find anymore. That is Positive Mind and Disciplined Drive in the same block.
Protect your focus like it is worth money, because it is. The thief in your pocket only wins if you hand it over. Go deep.
Let’s get after it in life, family, and business. AND LET’S PLAY TO WIN!!!
Lots of love,
Nate
