Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
“The biggest thing that really separated me through my career was my mental game.” Michael Phelps
This is more than a sports quote;
this is a reminder of how we play to win in life, family, and business.
Regardless of the heat, cold, or rain, building our minds up to win before the day starts is critical.
And if we care at all about winning OR all the people counting on us, sleep matters.
Dr. Huberman, a renowned neurobiologist at Stanford University of Medicine, and Dr. Matt Walker, professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley, both make the same point: alcohol may make you feel sleepy, but it disrupts sleep quality, fragments the night, and reduces REM sleep, which means worse recovery and a less-restored brain and body the next day.
This is true year-round, and it’s especially important in the coming months of Phoenix heat, as it also depletes the minerals for the critical functions of the brain and every other organ (see the extra credit below).
Huberman emphasizes that from a neurological and physiological perspective, avoiding alcohol entirely is the best choice for optimal sleep and health.
That should get our attention.
It is about thinking clearly, moving well, reacting faster, driving safely, and protecting each other.
So the challenge is simple:
Think about your “Why”… why do you care about being your best?
Make a commitment to up your game… We all have something we can improve (Kaizen).
Protect your brain and sleep!
Let’s work smart, stay safe, and play to win!
